Summer English Schools in Exeter: 12-17 years
Exeter – the capital of the South-West
The beautiful capital of Devon, Exeter is a fascinating combination of modern day and historical life. The town itself is a beautiful fabric of shops, café, bars, and fast-food restaurants woven around a historic town center dominated by Exeter’s magnificent 13th century cathedral. Close to the Dartmoor National Park and the sandy beaches of South Devon, Exeter’s charm extends well beyond its city center to its gorgeous surroundings.
“Boredom” is an unknown concept in Exeter. You’ll have the opportunity to make friends from all over Europe during your English summer courses, giving you lots of company for your afternoon strolls through the city or trips to Exmouth beach (public transport takes about 30 minutes for 3 GBP). Of course, don’t forget to check out our various sports activities and workshops offered on campus; with so many opportunities “busy” will hardly describe your day.
E.g. 1 week in residential accommodation from 533 GBP
The campus
Situated in the North of the city, just a 15-minute walk from the town centre, the Streatham Campus of Exeter University is an attractive university campus overlooking the historic city of Exeter. The beautiful campus grounds contain 350 acres of woodland, lakes and parks. The residential houses, the refectory and the classrooms for your English summer course are all situated on the campus. The IP Ocean Lounge, where you will be able to meet friends from all over the world and where most of our activities take place, is also located at the heart of the campus. The IP Fruit 'n' Fit - Corner offers you all day long water, tea and fruit. There is a volleyball pitch, outdoor tennis courts and a heated outdoor swimming pool (to be used once a week) on campus. Public payphones and a launderette with coin-operated washing and drying machines help to ensure that your stay is comfortable.
The summer English Schools in Exeter
Your English summer course takes place in the modern classrooms on campus. Our language courses are attended by students from all over the world and have been designed specifically for young people, who are visiting a foreign country for a short period. Maximum class size is 15. All teachers are native speakers and qualified in teaching English as a foreign language. Teaching material is provided, and has been carefully compiled and selected for originality, content and relevance to young people, so your English will quickly improve.
You’ll take a placement test upon arrival, which determines your course level. The following levels are catered for: lower intermediate (A2), intermediate (B1), upper intermediate (B2), advanced (C1). At the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate indicating your language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference Levels.
English Language courses
General English Course: 15 lessons (x 45 mins) per week
Lessons normally take place from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 11:45. Each of the three morning lessons focuses on a specific area of language learning: grammar and language work, reading and listening, or communicative activities and speaking practice. Our aim is to provide you with the vocabulary and grammar required for effective communication and particular attention is paid to improving speaking and listening skills.
Intensive English Course: 20 lessons (x 45 mins) per week
The Intensive Course consists of the General English Course plus an additional lesson per day (11.45 -12.30) in which key areas of language learning are practised in more depth. If you have registered to enter the Trinity Oral Examination a specific preparation is offered in the 4th lesson.
Trinity Oral Examination
In the English speaking world there are a number of tests which measure language abilities. The Trinity Exam programme, conducted by Trinity College London since the 1880s, is a popular option for students on short term courses. Trinity Graded Examinations in Spoken English for speakers of other languages provide an internationally recognised scheme of assessment through which students can measure their language development for educational or vocational purposes. The awarded grades range from 1 (absolute beginner) to 12 (very advanced). You can take the Trinity Oral Examination in Exeter (to be booked in advance) but you have to book the Intensive Course in order to get prepared.
Exams take place on the 12th July, 19th July, 26th July, and 9th August 2013.
